Her name is Kassandra Ruth Solomon and she's my newest niece. She was somewhat of a surprise to her family. (Kristina's youngest was seven years old when she found out she was pregnant.) Although she was happy, it took some time for mommy to adjust to the idea of being pregnant again. Their family moved to Meridian about a year ago, where her husband, Kelly, has a new job. She has struggled in the past with high blood pressure, toxemia, and depression with her other pregnancies and spends much of her time in bed sick for the first half and on bed rest the second half. She is pretty high risk because of that, and is also borderline diabetic. So, it was a little scary venturing back into this territory at age 39.Because of the kinds of struggles Kristi has during pregnancies, and then there's the factor that she really needed new baby stuff again, Shaunna decided we should throw her a surprise baby shower while she was in Idaho. So, Sarah, Rachel, Valarie (my sister-in-law), and I drove over to Meridian the afternoon of the 7th, arriving just before the party was to start. Two of her new friends were already at Mike and Krystal's house (my youngest brother and his wife). We waited a little while and visited until Kristina, her daughter Shannon, Mom and Shaunna showed up. She was really surprised to see us all there. Her sister-in-law from Twin Falls came over with her daughters, too. It really made her happy to know she had so much love and support around her. I gave her my bassinet (kind of a hard final thing for me to part with, but I'll expound on that another time) and we filled it up with diapers, outfits, burp cloths, blankets, toys and other baby stuff. Mom pieced a cute gingham quilt that everybody helped tie that night. It was fun to see her so happy and excited about this cute pink baby that was on her way. We left really late that night to return to Pocatello for commitments the next morning. I was sooo tired, but enjoyed my peanut butter m&m's, diet cherry pepsi and a wonderful conversation with Valarie that kept me awake.
Gratefully, Kristina didn't have any problems with the blood pressure or toxemia this time, but did have to deal with gestational diabetes. With the help of a great doctor, modern medicines, a very helpful almost 16 year-old daughter, and many prayers, everything went really well and mom and baby are healthy, and doing great. Kristina says she feels better than she has for a really long time! Even post-partum, huh...who would have thought? Blessings really do come in all shapes and sizes.
